Dr. Carl McMillan of the Cary and Cornelius Holistic Dental Centers invites patients to learn about all the ways in which the smile can be restored. It is common for our team to see dental patients who want to change the way their smile looks while also improving its health. When teeth are missing, it can cause a serious problem. Not only are patients embarrassed by the way their smile looks when they laugh or speak with others, they are often also faced with problems with speaking and eating. Additionally, when left untreated, missing teeth can cause the existing teeth to shift out of place and result in the need for future dental work such as orthodontic services.
To avoid the need for further, more expensive treatments to repair damage from missing or extracted teeth, Dr. Carl McMillan encourages patients to consider the advantages of dental bridges.
Dental bridges are a common solution to missing teeth. These restorations are made of porcelain and are extremely beautiful. When placed into the smile, many patients are able to restore the function and beauty they once experienced. When Dr. Carl McMillan consults with new patients regarding dental bridges, they often speak highly of them. They are more suitable for many patients than dentures but are less expensive than dental implants.
Dental bridges are fabricated using crowns and pontics. Crowns are bonded onto each side and placed over the adjacent teeth while the pontics (false teeth) rest on the gum line to replace what was once there. Bridges do require some special care, including flossing underneath and regular dental appointments to ensure problems such as cavities and periodontal disease do not develop on the teeth underneath the dental crowns. Patients who maintain their recall visits with their dentists will experience minimal problems. Patients should also avoid chewing and biting on hard objects, which can break the restoration and require a new one to be made and placed.
