When patients think of dental care, they often think of cleanings and examinations twice a year, as well as, the occasional dental filling for cavities. However, at the Cary and Cornelius Holistic Dental Centers, we provide more than just standard dental care. We provide holistic services.
A holistic dentist is a professional who works with patients to ensure that everything done within the oral cavity is done with the health and wellness of the entire body in mind. Dr. Carl McMillan and his team of professionals believe that patients should understand how the smile links to the body. This is called the oral systemic connection. When bacteria is present within the smile, in the form of periodontal disease, it can carry through the bloodstream and to other parts of the body; such as organs. It can then cause inflammation throughout the body and result in an increased risk of strokes and heart attacks among other medical conditions. Dr. Carl McMillan and the team of Cary and Cornelius Holistic Dental Centers believes patients should take proper care of their smile to avoid the development of periodontal disease to begin with.
A holistic dental also uses materials within the smile that are biocompatible with the body. This means eliminating metals and silver amalgam fillings from the list of services provided. Silver amalgam fillings, used by dentists for many decades, have been shown to release mercury into the bloodstream and cause neurological damage. At our practice, we eliminated these types of fillings and now use composite resin fillings which are not only safer, but more aesthetically pleasing when placed within the smile. Eliminating metals has also helped in increasing the health and wellness of the oral cavity by using materials, like porcelain, that are more aesthetic and biocompatible.
Dr. Carl McMillan of Cary and Cornelius Holistic Dental Centers is proud to provide patients with quality care while maintaining their overall health and wellness.
