Do you want an attractive, striking smile free from imperfections? Do you find yourself hiding your teeth behind your hand during conversations with others, or avoiding talking and smiling altogether? Are you embarrassed at the condition of your smile, and want an affordable and effective solution to boost your self-confidence? If this sounds like you, it may be time to speak to a dentist in the Cary, NC area about dental solutions such as porcelain veneers.
How porcelain veneers work
Porcelain veneers, sometimes just referred to as dental veneers, are very thin shells of ceramic that are custom-made to cover a patient’s tooth near the front of the smile. These teeth are referred to as the anterior teeth. The anterior teeth are the most noticeable teeth when patients laugh, talk, and smile with others. By covering imperfections with porcelain veneers, patients can completely enhance their appearance—and self-esteem!
What steps are needed to obtain porcelain veneers?
There are three steps involved:
- Consultation – first, patients consult with Dr. Carl McMillan and his team regarding the concerns they have with their smile. Imperfections such as staining, breakage, and even unusually-shaped teeth can impact the smile in a negative way. Once these imperfections are identified, Dr. Carl McMillan will examine the smile to determine if the patient is a proper candidate for porcelain veneers.
- Preparation – second, patients will undergo preparations for their porcelain veneer. The process starts by removing a thin portion of the natural tooth enamel from the front of the teeth and roughening it to ensure the tooth adheres to the new restoration. Impressions, or molds, are taken to the natural tooth and sent to a dental laboratory where a ceramist will fabricate the final restoration. They take into account the size, shape, and color of the existing teeth to make a beautiful veneer.
- Placement – third, patients return to the dental office when their veneer is complete, typically just a week or two after their preparation appointment. The dentist will bond the veneer to the tooth to complete the process.
