Crowns are one of the most commonly performed restorations and are an integral part of saving a severely decayed tooth. Crowns are designed to mimic the shape, color, and size of natural tooth. They are used to cover existing teeth that are damaged and to protect them from further damage.
Holistic Dental Centers has offices located in both Cary and Cornelius for the convenience of patients from Raleigh to Charlotte and across the state. We strive to take the most conservative and holistic approach to restorations. Before recommending any type of procedure, we will perform a thorough examination to find out if another approach such as a filling or veneer is a viable option. Some instances when a crown may be necessary include:
- Teeth that have become fractured, broken, or worn down. Dental crowns are extremely effective at protecting a broken tooth or preventing a crack from spreading. They restore structure, functionality, and aesthetics for teeth that are worn down or damaged.
- Failed dental fillings. Decay can develop behind a compromised filling and in some instances; a tooth may even fracture around an older filling. This can cause a much larger hole than the initial filling, limiting the ability to replace the filling with a new one. A crown can protect the tooth from further damage.
- Cosmetic enhancements. In most cases, teeth whitening or veneers will be recommended as conservative ways to mask imperfections and create an improvement in the esthetics of your teeth. However, in some cases they may not be an option. In these cases, a crown may be recommended to restore the appearance of the smile.
For many decades, metal crowns were the standard. At Holistic Dental Centers’ offices, we practice metal-free dentistry. Our practice believes that the health of your mouth is directly related to your entire wellbeing. This belief system leads to our careful consideration of the materials that we use in our patients’ mouths. We provide metal-free porcelain crowns for our patients.
Porcelain is a strong material that very closely resembles tooth enamel, leaving patients with a natural looking restoration that blends in well with their existing teeth.
If you are in the Raleigh area and currently have teeth that are damaged or worn down, and would like to learn more about dental crowns, call our Cary office today, our Cornelius office is convenient for patients in the Charlotte area.
