Your smile is your most memorable physical trait and a valuable social asset. It is understandable why patients are upset when a tooth is damaged and they fear it will have to be extracted. Even though a missing tooth can be beautifully restored with a fixed dental bridge, for most patients, it is not the same as still having their natural tooth. Patients who come to our Cary and Cornelius offices are delighted when they discover that Dr. Carl McMillan can restore their damaged tooth with a dental crown.
With dental crowns, almost all patients are a good candidate. Unfortunately, not all teeth can be restored with a dental crown. Your appointment will begin with a thorough examination from Dr. McMillan and x-rays will be taken. If it is determined, that the tooth’s root is healthy and only the visible portion is damaged it is likely your doctor will recommend a metal free crown to restore the tooth. If the root has been damaged and the tooth must be extracted, a fixed dental bridge is a simple and aesthetically pleasing restoration option.
The first step is to numb your tooth with a local anesthetic. Once you are numbed, your doctor will remove the damaged portion of the tooth and reshape it. We will take impressions of your teeth, which will be used by the dental lab to create your new crown. Dr. McMillan will place a temporary restoration that will protect the prepared tooth. Once we have received your permanent crown you will come back to our office for a second appointment and your doctor will cement the crown in place, completing your restoration.
The sooner a damaged tooth is treated the better the odds are that Dr. McMillan will be able to restore it. We offer our patients two locations to make quality dental care convenient. You can schedule your appointment at our Cary office by calling (919) 865-0700 or contact our Cornelius office at (704) 765-3150 .
