At Cary and Cornelius Holistic Dental Centers, we offer our patients a wide range of procedures that can be done to improve the smile’s health and wellness. We also have a number of cosmetic dentistry procedures that may be used to enhance the appearance. Dr. Carl McMillan reviews with new and existing patients the purpose of each treatment and how it can dramatically rejuvenate one’s oral health and appearance. One treatment often used in his practice is that of the dental crown.
Dental crowns have often been referred to as caps. Caps have been used for many decades to strengthen and protect teeth. Made to cover the entire exposed area of a tooth, a dental crown can provide the structure needed to maintain a natural tooth even after trauma or large areas of decay.
Dental crowns are made of porcelain; a material that is both strong and closely resembles the appearance of natural tooth enamel. They are fabricated with impressions of the natural teeth that are prepared with removal of enamel around the tooth. This eliminates the extra bulk that could be added by a dental crown. The new crown is bonded over the tooth and patients will be able to sustain the biting and chewing forces needed for their mouth to function properly.
There are many uses for dental crowns. Patients may need to have a dental crown placed over a tooth that has recently had root canal therapy to give it extra strength that it may otherwise lose. A dental crown may be used over a tooth that has experienced a large area of decay and may need more structural enhancement. Patients can also use a dental crown over a dental implant to act as a false tooth, or bond them to false teeth called pontics, to create a dental bridge. All of these are effective ways of using a dental crown to improve the smile.
Patients in and around the area are welcome to contact the team of Cary and Cornelius Holistic Dental Centers to learn more about the advantages of quality treatments; such as the fabrication and placement of dental crowns.
