An endless number of scenarios can result in patients needing to have a crown placed. Frequently it involves a tooth with a cavity that was not treated, but sometimes it can be something as simple as eating corn nuts. Accidents are another common occurrence that brings patients to our offices in Cary and Cornelius with a damaged tooth that needs a dental crown.
A dental crown is used to restore a tooth that has suffered extensive damage and it cannot be restored with a composite filling. At the Holistic Dental Centers, we are metal free; our dental crowns are made of a biocompatible material. The crown is shaped like a hollow tooth and will be placed over the damaged tooth to restore both aesthetics and function. Dental crowns are designed to match the shade, shape, and size of the existing teeth.
When a patient comes into either of our offices with a damaged tooth Dr. Carl McMillan will begin by conducting a thorough examination of the tooth to ensure it can be restored with a dental crown. Providing you are a candidate for a dental crown, we will begin by administering local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding area. Then the doctor will remove the damaged part of the tooth’s structure and shape it to accommodate the crown. Next, he will take impressions of both the upper and lower arches of teeth. The impressions are used by a dental lab to fabricate your new crown, a process that takes about two weeks. Dr. McMillan will determine the proper shade for your crown so it will be a perfect match. The appointment will conclude with the doctor placing a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth.
Once your permanent restoration is ready, you will return to our office for placement of the crown. Your doctor will remove the temporary and confirm the fit, function, and appearance of your permanent crown. He will then cement it into place.
All materials the doctors and team use at either of our offices are biocompatible and the safest type available. Your health and safety are our top priority. If you have a tooth that needs a crown, you can call either our Cary office at (919) 865-0700 or our Cornelius location at (704) 765-3150 and schedule an appointment.
