Cavities are one of the most common issues we see in our Cary and Cornelius offices. Next to the common cold, they are the most common health disorder. Good oral hygiene and preventive dental care is essential in preventing the development of cavities. When they are detected early, Dr. McMillan can restore the tooth with an athletically pleasing composite resin filling.
When you eat foods that contain starches or sugars, they can cling to the surface of your teeth, and contribute to the formation of plaque. The plaque can combine with the bacteria in your mouth and produce an acid that can damage the tooth enamel. Because plaque is often difficult to remove from your molars and between teeth, even patients who are diligent with their daily oral hygiene can still develop cavities. The sooner cavities are detected the less damage they can do to the tooth structure and the easier it is for Dr. McMillan to treat them.
Treatment depends on the amount of damage that has been done to the tooth, in extreme cases it can result in the tooth having to be extracted. When the cavity is detected early, the tooth typically can be restored with a composite resin filling. This simple procedure usually is completed in one appointment. Once the tooth is numbed, your doctor will remove the damaged portion of the tooth’s structure while keeping the tooth dry. He will apply the resin a layer at a time until the damaged area is filled. Composite resin fillings are tooth colored, so the finished restoration is virtually invisible. They are also safer and healthier. For years, the standard filling material was silver amalgam, a substance that contains mercury. Here at Holistic Dental Centers we can safely remove these fillings and replace them with a heather alternative such as composite resin fillings and porcelain crowns.
If you are suffering from a toothache, or have old amalgam fillings you need to have removed, call our Cornelius (704) 765-3150 or Cary (919) 865-0700 office to schedule your appointment. The Cary office is convenient for Cary residents to get the safe holistic dental care they deserve.
