How to Choose a Holistic Dentist

Looking for a holistic dentist? Here are a few good questions to ask when choosing a holistic dentist (also known as a biological dentist).
1. Ask if the dentist uses amalgam—and if not, why?

2. Ask if the dentist uses titanium implants.

3. Ask if the dentist believes in root canals.

4. Ask if the dentist uses all of the protective equipment to ensure the safest removal of amalgam/mercury.

5. Ask if the dentist belongs to and attends regular meetings of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine and/or Holistic Dental Association, or has a Huggins Alliance Membership.

6. Ask what the dentist’s beliefs on mercury and fluoride are.

7. Ask if the dentist follows any recognized protocol to remove amalgam.

8. Find out if the dentist holds him/herself out as a “Cosmetic Dentist.” This is a potential red flag since many dentists are Cosmetic, and therefore don’t place amalgam, but they do not believe it is a problem to a human’s health.

9. Find out if the dentist is concerned with the use of any material in the mouth having a harmful effect on health.

10. Ask if the dentist has metal in his mouth.

Using these questions, you can determine what your dentist’s views are towards mercury amalgam and holistic dentistry.

Our Beliefs About Holistic Dentistry

At Holistic Dental Centers, our goal is to provide you with the very best in holistic dentistry and non-toxic restorative materials. Here are some of our beliefs about holistic dentistry and your health.

1. We believe dental decay and gum disease are controllable, but not curable.

2. We believe people want to be free from the pain and discomfort of gum disease.

3. We believe people want to be free from headaches, facial pain, and associated problems of decay, gum disease, and malocculsion (misalignment of teeth).

4. We believe that gum disease and decay are two of the most crippling diseases known to man. They are not curable, but they are preventable.

5. We believe all people should be educated in a non-threatening environment relative to the causes, prevention and treatment of those three primary diseases.

6. We believe all patients should be educated, and then offered preventative and treatment choices that are consistent with their needs, wants, and values.

7. We do not believe in manipulating or struggling with patients to get them to do something that they should be doing for themselves.

8. We will not care more for the teeth of any patient than they care for themselves.

9. We will not rescue patients. We will provide options and opportunities for them to choose the level of care that is consistent with their needs, wants, and values.

10. We believe all patients should have a complete examination with complete records and a completely prepared diagnosis and treatment plan.

11. We believe all patients should have an education appointment. We call it a “comprehensive co-exam” to educate and inform the patient regarding the causes of disease and preventative and/or repair treatment.
